Dallas Furnace Repair & Replacement
In the situation that your furnace fails, furnace replacement is not only a costly option, but it is one that ultimately leaves a family without sufficient heat from the time of removal to replacement with a new furnace.
Before having to shell out a large amount of cash for a replacement, it is wise to know the signs that your furnace is going out and needs to be repaired. As the air begins to chill, be on the lookout for these three warning signs that furnace repair is something you need to look into.
1) Burner Flame is Yellow
A furnace that is in proper condition will always burn a blue flame. Discoloration of the flame is a key indicator that something is wrong with your appliance. If your flame is burning yellow on your burner, this could be a sign that your furnace is producing carbon monoxide. Other signs of carbon monoxide include streaks of soot around the furnace, and rusting of flue pipes.
2) You Hear a Knocking Sound
When you turn your furnace on and notice that it begins to make some unfamiliar noises, this is a key indicator that it is either time for a furnace repair, or that your furnace has aged to the point that it has reached the end of its life.
Noises that are a sure sign that something is wrong with your furnace include:
Another thing to listen out for is your furnace’s blower. If you notice that your blower turns off and on by itself or blows cold air, call your local professional air conditioning and heating repair company.
3) Your Heating Bill Rises Unexpectedly
If you have had your home for a few years it becomes easy to determine what each of your bills will cost for the next month. If you receive your next gas bill and your payment has spiked drastically, then this is a red flag that something could be wrong with your furnace.
Keep in mind that there are numerous problems that could cause an unexpected bill increase, but a dramatic increase is always something to be wary of when furnace repair is on the table.

Electric or Gas Heating Options in Dallas
In order to discuss furnace options available, we have to first discuss heating sources available. In Dallas, as in the rest of the country, a majority of homes are heated by either natural gas or electricity. But Dallas and the rest of the south skew more towards electric than most of the US. In a few old homes, you might still find an old oil furnace or a propane tank, although these are rare. Geothermal is also rare and is a different type of heating source, although it is growing in popularity, especially in Highland Park area.
According to the US Energy Information Administration’s Residential Energy Consumption Survey, about half of Texas homes are heated with electricity. Natural gas is used to heat only about 42% of Texas homes. About 2-3% use propane, and a very small percentage have no heat at all.
Why is Electric Heat So Popular in Texas?
It seems counter-intuitive, that a city and state economy so reliant on natural gas production, wouldn’t have more homes running on natural gas for heat. Although the natural gas industry created Texas boom-towns over the last decade and prices for fuel remain low, gas installation costs are much higher than electric resistance heating.
Natural gas heating is popular in select neighborhoods throughout DFW, but requires multiple houses connected for it to be economical during installation. Alternatively, electric resistance heat is cheap and quick to install. This suits the population boom in DFW, as home builders are already swamped with enough projects.
So the short answer is, electric heat is more cost effective for the builder and saves time during home construction, making it the most popular heat source.
Downsides of Electric Heat
Although electric heat is cheap during installation, it creates costly utility bills. Natural gas prices have historically been, and will continue to be, lower than the price of electricity in Texas. However, the cost of each fuel source is only one factor, electric resistance heat is also less efficient.
So you pair a pricey heat source with a less efficient electric furnace, and you get high electric bills each month. Heat pumps which can be powered by electricity cut down energy use by 50%. So if you don’t have hookups for heating via natural gas, a heat pump is a cheaper and more efficient option.
Heat pumps and natural gas furnaces do cost more in repairs and maintenance than electric resistance furnaces, although they are still cheaper than electric.
