Power Outage? How to Properly Restart Your AC System

Air Conditioning and Heating

If you experience power outages in your Carrollton, Texas, home, you may notice problems with your air conditioning system when it starts back up. To help your air conditioning system run effectively after a power outage, it is crucial to follow a few simple steps to properly restart it.

Turn Off Unit

Start by turning off the unit with your thermostat. This step is as simple as switching the setting to off. By doing this, you will prevent your thermostat from making a connection to your air conditioning system while you complete the reset process.

Cut Power

The next step in the process is cutting the power to your air conditioning unit directly at the circuit breaker. During a storm, power surges can send a jolt to your circuit breaker, blowing a fuse or switching it off. The circuit breaker is most likely located in your garage, basement, or storage area and should be labeled that it belongs to the air conditioning unit. Simply move the setting from on to off.

Restart Circuit Breaker

After a couple of minutes, you should flip the circuit breaker back to the on position. This process is similar to restarting a computer after it has crashed. You will ultimately be resetting all the systems.

Wait It Out

After the system has been turned on at the breaker, you will need to give it time to have everything properly reset. This can take around 30 minutes to fully complete, so you will need to wait for at least a half-hour before performing the final step.

Restart System

After waiting, it is time to turn your system back on. Turn the thermostat to the on position and adjust the temperature if needed to trigger the air conditioning to run. If your system fails to turn on, it could mean that it sustained damage during the storm and you will need to call for a repair.

By following the steps above, you will be able to properly reset your air conditioning system after a storm. If you still have problems after resetting your system, call the Carrollton HVAC specialists at Lex Air Conditioning and Heating at (972) 217-8955.
